Where has the time gone?

Since I last posted...
We moved out of our rental home. Stayed for 3 weeks with a friend in the area. Went to San Antonio for a week. Had the back window of our van shot out. Signed our contract and moved into our new home. All by August 7th!
Then the real fun started as we experienced the help of all sorts of "professionals" like movers, AC repair, sprinkler install, mirror install, and electric repairs.
Now we are in the midst of soccer and tennis season, I am taking 2 classes, and the first nine weeks of school is finishing up.
Before I know it I will be taking my school librarian certification test and interviewing for a new job! Life just never seems to slow down!

Summer break?

Well it is almost the end of June, and I have been going non-stop since school ended on June 4th! That's thanks to the fact that on June 11th, our current landlord told us we needed to move out in 30 days! So the frantic search for a house started, and my graduate classes continued to eat up the remainder of my time. This summer I was supposed to be able to focus on my classes, get into a routine of going to the YMCA to work out again (finally), and keep my kids engaged all summer with activities galore! Well, my kids are still doing fun things! My son is attending VBS, and will start swim lessons next week. My daughter is playing in a basketball league with games twice a week as well as volunteering at the public library the other 2 nights of the week. She will also get to attend camp in August. As for me, my graduate classes have been killer time consuming monsters! Any time I am not driving my kids some place, viewing houses, or cooking a meal, I am either reading textbooks or working on the computer (as my classes are online). Hopefully we will find out about the house we have an offer on today, and I can let go of some of that stress! Until then, I keep plugging away!

Is it summer yet?

Could this year BE any crazier? Hurricane Ike, Houston flooding, and now swine flu! WOW!

I am amazed at the resiliency of the students of Houston schools! They have kept up without batting an eye! Out of school for 2 weeks? No problem! Streets flood and school closes for a day? Great! And yet my fifth grade students, as well as the other grade levels at my school, continue to perform with great success on TAKS and in the classroom. Other than some pent up energy from either lack of sleep or being cooped up without recess, my week went as expected.

With the presence of this virus lurking in schools not far from me, I cannot wait for the end of the school year! I just hope most of us can escape with out contracting it, and the school officials keep doing the right thing. I don't envy the decisions our leaders will have to make in the coming weeks.

Remember: wash your hands, cover your mouth, and keep your han-i-tizer (my friend's little one combined hand sanitizer) close by!

Ding Dong! They Are gone!

After over one month of dealing with them, our lice situation is ending! Not only did my son have to deal with them for 3 weeks, but my daughter - with beautiful thick hair - had 3 weeks of me searching her scalp as well. I am hoping that sending them back onto our sofa is a safe gamble at this point! I will try to post my method of maddnes and persistance at a later time. For now, I am just thankful the stress can start to lift! I just try not to be too over confindent as I hope they are not lurking somewhere and we start all over again!

Make it go away!

Sometimes it amazes me how astute my son can be! A little over a week ago he was scratching at his head, and asked me if he had "lice bugs" in his hair. I checked multiple times, but couldn't find anything so I reassured him that it was from getting so hot and sweaty outside.

Skip ahead to Monday afternoon... His teacher stops me at school saying that J was concerned about his head itching, but the nurse had been busy when she sent him earlier in the day. So, before we left the building we had the nurse do a thorough check. And sure enough... she caught a live one!

I must admit I freaked out on the inside, but tried my hardest to remain calm and let him know everything was going to be okay. (It didn't make things any easier to know that my in-laws were at the house waiting to go to my daughter's final basketball game!) We bought the medicine, went home and treated his little head. Then I went through the house gathering everything up that he had come into contact with over the past 3 days - jackets, hats, blankets, towels, you name it! Bless my husband - he stayed up late and even home from work that morning to make sure all the laundry I deemed necessary to wash was done!

All was going well... J and I were checked by our school nurse every day for a week and nothing else was found. I checked his head and my daughter's head at night, and still nothing. Our retreatment day was around the corner, and I thought we were in the clear. Then, in the middle of my daughter's Saturday night sleep over I found another little guy on J! Home went the little girl, and the whirlwind started all over again!

This stuff is the pits! I hate that it makes me feel ashamed because I did nothing wrong! I sent my kid to school and the YMCA just like every other kid that week, and we get stuck with this problem! It gives me the itchies, the willies, and the heebie jeebies all at the same time! Plus I think I have a sore back from the stress alone!

I just want it to go away!!!
